The sun is by far the most powerful source of energy for our planet; did you know that in only an hour the earth can receive enough energy from the sun to meet our power needs for a whole year? Today, we’re learning more sophisticated ways to benefit from the sun; solar energy is often the cheapest way to provide energy for our homes. With easy to install solar panels, it’s possible to get heat and electricity you can use for all of your power requirements.
Many people think that building your own solar panels at home is difficult. Of course, you do need to have some DIY skills, in that you need to be handy with a soldering iron and to be able to handle a saw, but other than that you can have a solar panel ready in no time at all. Some of the items that you will need to build your own solar panels are, solar cells, wood for the container and some plexiglass for the cover. You will have to use caulk to attach your solar cells to your wooden container. Pre-tabbed solar cells will make the wiring easier. Before you glue your solar panels in place you will have to solder tab on, if you are unable to find panels that have the tabs on them.
The container for your solar panel is simply a box with a Plexiglas front, which will allow sunlight to flow in but will ensure that the cells are protected. The substrate is what you will use to glue your solar cells to. Only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell because wood tends to expand and shrink with the weather. It’s imperative that you avoid damaging cells by using a single dot of this caulk to allow wood to shift. After you have pushed the wires through the hole that you drilled make sure that you have filled it with caulk. Then, screw your Plexiglas on and mount it where you want.
The only connections that you will need will be for the battery. Power will flow from the solar cells to the batteries. Having your batteries power your solar panels is a waste of energy. However, for those who choose to use a charge controller this step is not necessary.
The usual ratio to keep in mind is that eighty solar cells will generate approximately one hundred watts of electricity. Considering this you can now determine how large to make your solar panels and how many of them you need to power your home. Although it does require a small amount of do it yourself know how, building your own solar panel really isn’t that hard after all. If you are serious about saving money, this is a project easy enough for even the novice to complete once the materials are rounded up and the patience to succeed is wrangled into production.
Many people do not have quite enough money to complete all of the do it yourself work they would like to. That’s why borrowing funds make sense. You will end up enhancing the value of your property, so it makes excellent financial sense to get this done.
